A Queens man was shot and killed by police officers Sunday morning after he charged at them with a box cutter during a domestic dispute, NYPD officials said.

According to police, two officers responded to a 911 call about a man having a dispute with his son in Far Rockaway at 1170 Nameoke Street. The officers arrived on scene and were met by parents of a 29-year-old male.

The officers then entered the apartment building with the parents to find their son, NYPD officials said. He was later found in the hallway outside the family’s apartment building holding a box cutter.

“The father of the male immediately engaged in an altercation with his son, which then became physical,” NYPD Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera said in a news conference. “The officers gave multiple verbal commands to the male to drop the weapon as they attempted to deescalate the situation.”

Officials said the male refused to comply with the police’s orders. The father then retreated from his son and stood behind the officers. According to police, the 29-year-old charged at the officers and one officer discharged his taser. Immediately after, the second officer fired his weapon at the man.

The man was transferred to Jamaica Hospital by emergency medical services and pronounced dead. Police officials did not identify him.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing. The NYPD said the entire dispute was captured on the officers’ body-worn cameras.
