Multiple tornadoes touched down in parts of New York and New Jersey on Tuesday as severe storms swept through the region, National Weather Service meteorologists confirmed.
The National Weather Service confirmed an EF-0 tornado in the Purchase and Rye Brook areas of Westchester County, just north of New York City.
The tornado uprooted several trees and downed utility wires as it traveled through the area. Tree branches and leaf debris were reported on the Hutchinson River Parkway, according to the weather service.
The National Weather Service also confirmed multiple tornadoes in New Jersey as damage surveys continue.
Tornadoes are uncommon, though not unprecedented, in the New York City region. Tuesday's tornadoes developed as severe thunderstorms brought heavy rain and flash flooding across parts of the tri-state area.
During the storm, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens were placed under flash flood warnings, and all five boroughs were under a tornado watch.
The National Weather Service urged residents to watch for flooding on highways, streets and in low-lying areas.
