The New York City region will feel like the arctic Monday morning as real-feel temperatures hover around zero degrees with wind chills — leading officials and meteorologists to urge people to try to stay warm.
It will be the coldest day in the recent stretch of freezing weather, following the city’s biggest snowfall this early in the season since 2019, according to the National Weather Service.
“Everyone's going to have to get their jackets and gloves and scarves on,” meteorologist Brian Ciemnecki said.
Wind chills will only rise to between 10 and 20 degrees throughout the day, with gusts up to 21 mph, NWS said.
The city’s Emergency Management agency is warning of “dangerous life-threatening conditions for anyone without proper winter clothing and gear outdoors or reliable heat indoors.” Officials are reminding people to watch out for signs of frostbite and hypothermia as well as ice on roads and sidewalks.
“Frostbite can begin on uncovered skin in a short period of time, especially with strong winds,” Emergency Management wrote on X, saying New Yorkers should limit their time outside and check on their neighbors. “Hypothermia becomes a risk when the body cannot maintain heat, which can happen quickly if you are outside without proper clothing or if you get wet.”
Residents can call 311 to request outreach assistance for those who need shelter, and 911 to report weather-related emergencies. They’re encouraged to call 311 if their heat or hot water is not working and attempts to resolve such issues with their landlords have failed.
Alternate side parking rules are suspended Monday to facilitate snow removal, but parking meters are still in effect, according to the city.
Some relief from the bitterly cold temperatures is on the way, the forecast shows. Tuesday will be slightly warmer, in the 20s with wind chills, while high temperatures on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are expected to climb into the 30s and 40s, according to NWS.
There’s also no more snow on the horizon for the foreseeable future. Ciemnecki said the next chance of precipitation will be Thursday night into Friday, but the warmer conditions mean it will just be rain.
