An off-duty NYPD sergeant driving the wrong way on the Taconic State Parkway struck and killed a Peekskill man late Thursday night, state police said.
Tiffany Howell, 47, a sergeant assigned to the department's Crime Control Strategies unit, was driving a 2021 Infiniti southbound in the northbound lanes when she collided head-on with a 2024 Toyota in the Town of Mount Pleasant around 11:39 p.m., according to state police.
Howell was returning home from work at the time of the crash, officials said.
The driver of the Toyota, Manuel Boitel, 61, was transported to Westchester Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said. Howell was also taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
State police said they are examining Howell's blood-alcohol level at the time of the crash.
Howell joined the NYPD in 2008, according to department records. She has been placed on modified duty pending the outcome of the investigation, department officials said. If she is arrested, she would be suspended under NYPD rules.
A spokesperson for the Sergeants Benevolent Association union declined to comment on the record but said that if Howell were arrested, she would have to hire her own attorney.
The New York attorney general's office has been notified of the incident, as required under state law when a police officer is involved in a death.
