Law enforcement officials charged three teenagers with murder Thursday for the fatal shooting of a 19-year-old man in the Bronx the day before.
Two 15-year-old boys and a 16-year-old boy were arrested around noon in the 47th Precinct, which includes the Edenwald neighborhood where Jahmir Turner was gunned down around 5:40 p.m. Wednesday, according to the NYPD.
One of the 15-year-olds turned himself in to authorities, police said. Officials did not publicly identify the teen defendants because they are minors.
All three boys were charged with murder, manslaughter and four counts of weapons possession, the NYPD said.
Information for their lawyers was not immediately available.
Police said they were still investigating the motive behind the shooting. They said a witness saw a brief discussion between Turner and the defendants, then heard five shots.
Turner was struck in his back outside a home on Secor Avenue near Conner Street and was pronounced dead at a local hospital, officials said. The NYPD said he lived less than a half-mile from where he was shot
He is the first teen to die of gun violence in New York City so far this year, after 25 teens were killed in shootings last year, according to police reports compiled by Gothamist.
Authorities were handling a rise in youth violence in the city in 2025, even as other crimes recorded historic declines. According to NYPD data, 14% of shooting victims were under 18 — a 5.2% increase from 2024 — as were 18% of alleged shooters. Police said both of those shares were the highest percentages since the department began tracking that information in 2018.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a press conference earlier this month that it would take “an all-of-city and, frankly, an all-of-state approach” to properly address youth violence in the city. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he agreed with her and was “looking forward to having those conversations.”
